Stargirl

Notes on food, appetite and the ordinary business of eating

About

What this site writes about, and how the entries are filed.

Stargirl is a written record of the ordinary machinery around eating: the units, the labels, the instruments and the words. It is interested in where those things came from and how their meanings have shifted, rather than in what anybody should do at the next meal.

Entries are filed under three standing subjects. Food History covers the arrival of measurements, categories and vocabulary. Eating Habits covers the shape of a day's eating and the ways it has been recorded and described. Kitchen Practice covers the plain mechanics of the counter, including labels and weighing.

How the writing is meant to be read

Everything here is informational. The entries describe historical practice, manufacturing conventions and research vocabulary; none of them assess an individual situation, and none of them are a substitute for a conversation with a qualified professional.

Figures quoted in the entries are described rather than calculated here, and no product, business or person is rated or recommended anywhere on the site.

How to move around

The front page carries the newest entry in full and the rest as excerpts. The three topic pages list the entries filed under each subject, and the archives list everything by date. Each entry links to its neighbours in the sequence.
